In December of 2020 I made the biggest purchase of my life. I purchased an AKC Golden Retriever puppy. She had the perfect golden coloring with a hint of red. I decided to call her Honey.
Honey Von Scarlet is her registered name. I haven’t regretted this purchase one bit. Honey has become a big part of my life. Those around us laugh at how close our temperaments are, and I’m amazed at how loyal she is. Of course, this wasn’t by accident, I had researched and found out how exceptional Goldens are.
Two years later I really want to share Honey with others. No, I’m not starting a rental service, I want to share her legacy with others through puppies. Whiskey proved to be the perfect stud. His coloring and temperament was a great fit. I can’t wait to see how much their pups are going to resemble them.
I’ll be honest, the process was a little stressful. Maybe they were shy, but we had to leave them alone. We weren’t sure they ever took to each other. The uncertainty didn’t last long. Honey grew very big. The vet confirmed it and gave Honey a clean bill of health. They suspected 2 or 3 pups.
Finally, on October 29th, 2:30 pm, we heard some whimpering in her whelping box. Honey had three beautiful pups already cleaned and ready to show off.
Things became stressful. By 8:30 we knew something wasn’t right. Honey was trying but couldn’t deliver the next one. Our local vet clinic was kind enough to take an ex-ray and confirm we had a breach puppy. We ended up in a Janesville emergency vet clinic and both vets prepared us that the breach puppy would probably not make it.
It was a long night. Our primary concern was Honey. We wanted her to be safe and good. We sat for what seemed like forever. The clinic closed at 1:00am, and we were still there. The only word we had was that Honey was good and there were a lot of puppies.
All of a sudden the door swings open and out bounded the most energetic woman you’ve ever met at 1:15am. We knew that Honey was fine, so we asked, how many puppies? We were amazed when she blurted out, 10. How many did we lose? Again, we were amazed when she said none.
The breach puppy not only made it, but is one of the biggest healthiest ones. So now we sit with 6 males and 4 females. Honey is such an attentive caretaker and we couldn’t be happier with her. I’m excited to know that there are 10 puppies that will carry Honey and Whiskeys characteristics.
Our first concern is Honeys health. There are some concerns after the surgery. Some people say we shouldn’t try to breed her again. The vet told us to give her plenty of healing time and a thorough check up first. However, we just aren’t sure if we will ever breed her again.
